XXXVII School Helsinki - Info

Venue

The school will be held in Aalto University at Otaniemi campus, Espoo, Finland. The campus is about 9 km from Helsinki city center and 27 km from Helsinki airport, with good connections using public transportation. Espoo is the second largest and the fastest growing city of Finland – part of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Espoo is Northern Europe’s largest high-tech and innovation hub where science, business and culture meet the wilderness of Nuuksio National Park and stunning seaside environment. The city’s innovative spirit, Aalto University, technology hub Otaniemi and international companies attract continuous interest from science, research, investors and business professionals worldwide.

The school takes place at room 1023 & 1024, located in the first floor of the TUAS building (Maarintie 8) in Aalto University. You can find a detailed map of the Otaniemi campus here.

How to reach the Venue

The easiest option for most people to get to the school site is flying to Helsinki with an airline of your choice. After you arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, there are multiple ways to get to the school venue:

  • Train + Metro: Take I- or P-train to Helsinki central railway station, and then change to metro (line M1 to Matinkylä or line M2 to Tapiola). Get off at the stop "Aalto University", take exit B and walk to the TUAS-talo (see the map below). A single regional ticket (5.5€ per person) is valid for all the public transport in Vantaa, Helsinki, Espoo during 80 minutes.
  • Train + Bus: Take I-train to Huopalahti or P-train to Oulunkylä, then transfer to bus 550 to Innopoli, you are close to the school venue. The same single regional ticket will work.
  • Taxi: the taxi stand is outside of the main entrance of the arrival hall. It takes about 30 minutes and around 45€ per taxi to the school venue.

More information about the local transport can be found below.

Accommodation

You are free to book your own accommodation according to your needs. The accommodation in greater Helsinki region is relatively high, we suggest you to book the hotel in your earliest convenience.

There are hotels close to the school venue, for example:

But the rate is relatively high. Therefore we suggest you to book other hotels in Espoo or Helsinki and take public transportation (see below).

Public transportation

There are several main things to know about public transport in Finland:

  1. It is integrated, thus one ticket can be used for all means of public transport: bus, train, metro, local train.
  2. The greater Helsinki consists of three cities: Helsinki, Vantaa (where the airport is located) and Espoo (where the meeting is held). One ticket is for a certain city (or for all cities) and travel time. If you travel only inside Espoo (or only inside Helsinki), a one-zone internal ticket should be purchased (symbol "1" on ticketing machines). It is valid for all means of transportation inside the corresponding city region for 60 minutes. If you travel over more than one city, for example, from the airport (Vantaa) to the venue (Espoo) or from the venue (Espoo) to the Helsinki center, the regional ticket is needed (symbol "2" on ticketing machines). It is valid for all means of transportation inside the whole greater Helsinki region for 80 minutes.
  3. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver, ticket machines (Entrance of train/metro station, not inside the train/metro), or R-kioski (store).
  4. Instead of buy tickets one by one, you can purchase days-ticket for covering several days. As you will probably travel between Helsinki and Espoo in general, we recommend you to buy “Region two-zone” ticket, for example, 28€ for 3 days. More details in https://www.hsl.fi/en/tickets-and-fares in “Day tickets” tab.
  5. You can use the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Journey Planner to plan your journey, to check the available bus/metro/train, see https://www.reittiopas.fi/.
