The XXXIX Edition of the Distributed Doctoral School on Metamaterials will be held on September 20-21, 2019 in Rome, Italy. The School is part of the Distributed School on Metamaterials run by EUPROMETA, the Eudcation Department of the METAMORPHOSE VI AISBL, and it will be held just after the 13th edition of the International Congress on Artificial Materials for Novel Wave Phenomena- Metamaterials 2019.

The school will be focused on Spatial, temporal and phase control in metamaterials and metasurfaces:new frontiers in wave tailoring.

All the updated information about the school and registrations can be found at the dedicated page on the Congress website

Abstract

The course will be focused on emerging engineered artificial materials whose electromagnetic, optical and acoustic properties are dynamically controlled in space, time and phase. The recent interest in this topic is motivated by the possibility to engineer both the spatial and temporal characteristics of the wave interacting with these materials almost at will, opening up possibilities to envision new wave phenomena and create new devices. The school offers a unique opportunity to students and young researchers to meet pioneers and leading experts in metamaterials and get exposure to the latest advancements in this burgeoning research field. Comprehensive lectures will take into account the widespread backgrounds of the audience.

About Rome

Rome is the capital and the most populated city of Italy. It is the only city of the world that hosts an independent country within its boundaries, that shall make it known as the “Capital of two states”.

No city in the world equals its history. Founded 2700 years ago, it has been continuously occupied since then and exhibits today an exceptional cityscape where Classical, Neoclassical, Renaissance and Baroque art are integrated into one whole masterpiece. Ancient icons such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon recall the city’s golden age, when it was known as Caput Mundi, “Capital of the world”, whereas the many monumental basilicas testify the historical role as seat of the Catholic Church. For example, St Peter’s Basilica is the Vatican’s epic showpiece church, a towering masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Elsewhere, piazzas and impressive fountains, designed by the leading sculptors of their age, add a baroque ornament to the city's streets.

Today, Rome is the city with highest number of monuments in the word, which attract an average of 7 to 10 million tourists per year. The city is served by two international airports:

1) The Rome–Fiumicino International Airport"Leonardo da Vinci" is the major airport in Italy and one of the busiest airports in Europe by passenger traffic. It is located in the city of Fiumicino, 35.0 km west of Rome's historic city center and has been recently awarded as the best European airport for services and performances. Direct flights from all the major cities in Europe, America and Asia are available.

2) The Rome-Ciampino International Airport “G.B. Pastine” is an important hub for many European low-cost carriers. It is located in 12.0 km south southeast of central Rome.
